Comenius
Over the last two years our School has been involved in a 'Comenius Project' - 'Different Words Under the Same Sun' which has finally come to an end.
The Comenius Project was developed to create international links between schools across Europe. Ysgol Bryn Hedydd has been working with 5 other European schools in order to achieve this objective - France, Poland, Catalonia, Romania and Turkey.
From the Comenius Project, we aimed to improve and develop the quality of teaching in our schools through the exchange of educational experiences and sharing of different methodologies. In order to reach this goal, as a school, we created opportunities for children to experience a multicultural context to increase awareness of being a European citizen. We have worked hard to improve the positive attitude towards different languages, customs and cultures within the European Community.
A highlight of the project has been the opportunity that staff and pupils have had to visit and learn from partner schools. 12 Year 6 children were able to visit schools in Barcelona and Lyon. This valuable opportunity enabled the children to meet and make new friends and learn about another European country. All the children acted as excellent ambassadors for both the school and Wales. Video conferencing has enabled us to share the opportunity to meet and communicate with other children to a wider audience.
The project has been a great success and we expect to see some of what we have learnt embedded into our own curriculum. We plan to take a break from Comenius for a while, and try to secure funding for a new project for the academic year starting in September 2016.
