  • The whole school has 'Fun With Phonics!'

    Mon 23 Apr 2012

We are sure your child has come home recently and spoken about 'Fun With Phonics'

This is a new initiative that KS1 started off for us at the beginning of the Spring Term. It worked so well with the infants, that it was decided that the junior children should follow the programme too.

At half past 10 every day, all children from Year 1 all the way through to Year 6 relocate into their groups to work on phonics in their focus groups.

As our written language uses phonetic sounds to create words, it is this knowledge that your child needs to fully master reading and spelling.

Every day for half an hour, your child will be taught these phonic sounds in order to help them with their reading and spelling. Every child in the school will be undertaking a reading or spelling activity during this time and teaching will be targeted and focused in order to help every single child reach their full potential.

  • Our fundraising efforts are presented to St Kentigern

    Mon 23 Apr 2012
On Friday 23rd April, Ysgol Bryn Hedydd presented a cheque for £1300! to the local charity, St Kentigern.
We have raised this money through two different events:
    1. Sponsored Cycle Ride
    2. 'Assume Position' Day

As a school, we wanted to do this in memory of a very dear friend to many of us at school, Mrs Gill Jones. She lost her life last August against cancer. She is greatly missed by staff and pupils alike.

A representative of the charity came forward to pick up the cheque and was very grateful to everyone who had raised money in support of this cause.
We also invited Gill's children, Lisa and Jason, to see the cheque being presented.

Thank you to everyone who raised money for this very worthy cause.

  • Former Bryn Hedydd pupils do us proud!

    Thu 19 Apr 2012

Did you happen to see a April 4th edition of the Journal during the Easter holidays?

An article caught our eye at Ysgol Bryn Hedydd...

    'Meet our local torch bearers'

The article was about the recent announcement of the London Games torch relay route and some of the inspirational people who have been asked to carry the flame.

Pupils from Rhyl High School are part of this fantastic honour and as we looked closely at the photo below, we could see 5 out the 8 chosen are former Bryn Hedydd pupils!

The pupils have been chosen because of their sporting excellence. We were really pleased to see swimmer Emily Thornton, hockey player Hal Shepherd, Wheelchair basketball star Dylan Evans, roller hockey player for Great Britain, James Morgan and golfer Rebecca Ogden.

This of course makes us very proud and shows that the skills they start to develop and employ whilst in our school have remained with them and allowed them to do so so well in many areas.

We are very proud of you all!

  • The wheels on the bus.....are firmly in place!

    Thu 19 Apr 2012
Just to let you know about the 'big yellow bus' which has appeared on the school yard during the Easter holidays.

If you have seen the press coverage then you will already know that the main reason is to create more space in school. Currently we have enough classroom space but struggle daily to find space for one-to-one and small group work.

We feel that children who are taken out of the classroom to do focused work deserve a place where they can concentrate and work to their potential, while being a positive learning environment.

With this in mind, our school will be renovating and renaming the yellow bus in the next few weeks. The children are all very excited to use it and we are confident that it will help those who it is intended for.

You may also see that the new KS2 playground is being erected this week. This will hopefully be ready to use on Monday 23rd April.

Both of these projects have been possible because of your support and fundraising. So many thanks for your continued support.
  • A big THANK YOU to 'New Direction'

Ysgol Bryn Hedydd would like to say a great big THANK YOU to 'New Direction' Supply Agency.

On 13th March, Ms Jenna Whittam came into school to present us with a cheque for £100. This is being put towards the new play area.

We would like to thank them for their generosity.

  • F1 team meet the First Minister

    Mon 02 Apr 2012
The F1 in Schools team have been on their travels over the last couple of weeks. Continuing their build up to the British Finals in June they have been to Donington Park F1 museum to see real F1 cars up close. They also went Go Karting in Queensferry on the way back to experience speed and cornering for themselves.

They have also been to Llandudno and The Celtic Manor in Newport to demonstrate their car and display. At Celtic Manor they were lucky enough to meet the First Minister, Carwen Jones, who was there to open the Technology conference.

He was very interested to see the difference in the cars over the last few years and chatted with the team about their experiences. The team also met Robert Jones, Ex Wales and British Lions scrum half.

They have been very busy and will use all these experiences to help them get ready for Birmingham.
  • Bryn Hedydd Termly Times Hits its 10th Edition!

    Sun 01 Apr 2012

Hopefully you should have all received your copy of the 10th Edition of the Termly Times, which was sent home on Friday.

The year 6 team have worked so very hard to produce this edition as it has been a very very busy half term, and time to work on the paper has been limited.

So, last week, with only half the team in school, they had just a day and a half to report, write and produce the paper! I think they have done a fantastic job, independent learning at its best!!

I'm really proud of their commitment to the BH Termly Times and thank them all for their hard work this week.

    Excellent teamwork!

    Mrs P-G
